I'm excited to be participating in Art Jam again this year. 

For three weeks, I'll be working from my temporary studio within the gallery, where visitors are welcome to watch my creative process unfold, ask questions, and see new work taking shape. 

 

During the residency, I'll be developing a new body of ceramic vessels and mixed-media works titled "Clay and Cardboard".

I will be taking inspiration from the layered surfaces of the urban landscape – weathered concrete, rusted steel, painted walls and industrial materials that carry the marks of time, use and making.

Cardboard has been part of my practice for many years, and working with clay has opened up another way to explore these ideas.  Both materials invite layering, texture and mark-making, allowing me to move freely between them as ideas evolve.

I’m interested in what materials can do when they’re given time, layers and room to evolve.  I intend to work instinctively, embracing the process and letting the materials  guide the work.  Using slips, oxides, glazes, paint and fire, I allow surfaces to emerge that reflect my fascination with texture, material and the traces left by making.

This body of work is part of that ongoing exploration.
