Artist Statement

Gillian Smith is a Sunshine Coast artist whose practice explores the relationship between ceramics and painting through a shared language of material, surface and place.

Working with clay, charcoal, and recycled cardboard, she creates contemporary vessels and expressive mixed-media works that exist in conversation with one another.

Inspired by weathered landscapes, geological formations and the quiet beauty of everyday surfaces, Gillian is drawn to materials that carry evidence of time and touch.  Clay records the movement of the hand, while cardboard bears the marks of its previous life.  Through layering, carving and expressive mark-making, these humble materials become vessels for memory - receptacles of stories.

Her practice is grounded in curiosity and an ongoing exploration of material.

Whether working in clay or on cardboard, Gillian seeks to create work that evokes a sense of place through texture, limited palette and the subtle conversation between the natural and built environments.
